NBA Hoops is back. After years under the Panini banner, the iconic brand that launched basketball card collecting as we know it has returned to Topps, and the 2025-26 Topps NBA Hoops Basketball set does not disappoint. Released May 14, 2026, this product brings the energy, color, and accessibility that made Hoops a hobby staple for more than three decades, while layering in the kind of insert creativity and autograph depth that today’s collectors expect.
With a historic rookie class headlined by Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, and Derik Queen, a stacked veteran checklist, and some of the most imaginative inserts Topps has put out since the brand relaunch, this is a product worth paying attention to. Here is everything you need to know.
A Brief History of NBA Hoops
The NBA Hoops brand debuted in 1989-90 as one of the first widely distributed NBA trading card sets. It became the entry point for an entire generation of basketball card collectors, offering affordable wax packs with vibrant photography and clean design. The 1989-90 set produced some of the most iconic cards in hobby history.
Here is something a lot of collectors get wrong: Topps did not acquire the Hoops brand from Panini. Hoops has always been owned by NBA Properties, the commercial arm of the NBA itself. The league owns the brand outright. What changes over time is simply who the NBA licenses the right to produce it. For years, that was Panini. When Fanatics secured the exclusive NBA and NBPA trading card license, the rights to produce Hoops came along with it, and Topps, operating under the Fanatics umbrella, is the company now putting cards on shelves.
Collectibles journalist Ben Burrows put it cleanly when Topps announced the brand’s return: “Hoops has been owned by NBA Properties but was produced by Panini in recent years. Fanatics can now operate the Hoops brand through its license with the NBA and NBPA.”
That distinction matters. The Hoops name never went anywhere. The NBA simply handed the keys to a new manufacturer. And while Topps is the one printing cards today, the brand’s legacy belongs to the league, stretching all the way back to that original 1989-90 set. Box Configurations and Prices
Understanding which format makes sense for your collecting style starts with the box breakdown.
Hobby Boxes: 8 cards per pack, 20 packs per box, 12 boxes per case. Release day pricing settled at $279.99 per box.
Jumbo Boxes: 20 cards per pack, 10 packs per box, 8 boxes per case. Priced at $519.99.
Value Blaster Boxes: 8 cards per pack, 7 packs per box. Available for $34.99.
Fanatics Exclusive Blaster: 8 cards per pack, 8 packs per box, priced at $39.99. Includes an exclusive Fanatics parallel.
Hanger Boxes: 25 cards per pack, one pack per box.
Hobby and Jumbo boxes are your best bet for chasing Pixel Burst parallels and premium autographs. Retail formats offer their own exclusive inserts and parallels, making them a fun and affordable alternative for collectors who prefer to build the base set or chase retail-only cards.
Key Rookies and Prospects
The 2025 NBA Draft class is one of the deepest in years, and Topps captured it well across multiple insert programs and autograph sets.
Cooper Flagg is the centerpiece of this entire product. The 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year and first overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks is featured heavily throughout the checklist, from base cards to Rookie Signatures, Rookie Duals, 1989 Signatures, and rare inserts. Topload everything with his name on it.
Kon Knueppel, Flagg’s former Duke teammate and Charlotte Hornets guard, is a standout supporting rookie. He appears alongside Flagg in the coveted Rookie Duals autograph set and has his own solo autos throughout the product. His The Buzz insert numbered to 99 in purple is one of the sharpest-looking cards in the set.
Dylan Harper, second overall pick to the San Antonio Spurs, is exactly the kind of player this set was built to showcase. His Pixel Burst Black base parallel numbered to just 10 copies is already one of the most talked-about cards from early breaks. As a Spur alongside 2024 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, the Rookie Veteran Dual featuring the two together is a must-chase as well.
Ace Bailey, Utah Jazz guard and lottery pick, shows up in the 1989 Signatures auto set with a gorgeous throwback design that connects directly to the brand’s origin. If you are a Jazz collector or believe in Bailey’s long-term upside, this is the one to lock down early.
Derik Queen, New Orleans Pelicans rookie, appears in the Next Episode insert set. Finding his Pixel Burst Red parallel numbered to just 5 is a legitimate case-opening accomplishment.
Base Set and Parallels
The 2025-26 Topps NBA Hoops base set is 300 cards deep and covers the full NBA landscape. Photography is strong throughout, and the card design channels the classic Hoops aesthetic while feeling distinctly modern. The NBA logo, team logo, and clean nameplate at the bottom are instantly recognizable to anyone who collected the original sets.
The parallel structure is where this product shines for rainbow chasers.
Hobby and Jumbo parallels: Rainbow, Pixel Burst, Rainbow Yellow (/275), Rainbow Green and Blue (/249), Rainbow Gold and Green (/199), Pixel Burst Blue (/149), Pixel Burst Purple (/99), Pixel Burst Green (/75), Pixel Burst Gold (/50), Pixel Burst Orange (/25), Pixel Burst Black (/10), Pixel Burst Red (/5), Pixel Burst Platinum (1/1).
Retail parallels: Rainbow, Light Burst, Fanatics exclusive, Green Hoops (Blaster exclusive), Orange Hoops (Hanger exclusive), plus a numbered Light Burst ladder running from /149 down to a 1/1 Platinum.
Stars like Nikola Jokic, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Luka Doncic, now in his Lakers uniform at #77, anchor the veteran base. Their low-numbered parallels will be among the most sought-after cards in the product for months to come.
The All-Star Variations featuring players in their 2025 NBA All-Star Game uniforms add another layer to the base card chase. These are short-printed variations numbered to 25 in retail parallels, and the Jalen Brunson Light Burst Orange variation numbered 11/25 from the All-Star Game in San Francisco is a strong example of what these look like in hand.
The Luka Doncic Green parallel, now featuring the five-time All-Star in his new Lakers uniform at #77, is one of the most sought-after retail parallels in the set.
Inserts and SP Inserts
The insert lineup in 2025-26 Topps NBA Hoops is one of the most creative in recent memory.
Highlights captures memorable moments from the 2024-25 NBA regular season. The Stephen Curry Highlights card is a horizontal landscape design with cinematic gold staging, commemorating a signature performance from December 28, 2024. A standout in any collection.
Dunk-umentory (Hobby-exclusive) turns the card into a movie poster, with the card back designed like a screenplay. The Vince Carter Dunk-umentory, presenting Half Man Half Amazing in full movie poster format with credits listing “Starring: Alley-Oop, 360 Windmill, Elbow Hang,” is an instant classic.
Checkmate (Hobby case hit) is a chess-themed insert dedicated to players who make the game look like art. Victor Wembanyama’s Platinum 1/1 Checkmate, surrounded by chess pieces against a green-and-black board, is one of the most spectacular single cards in the product. Wembanyama being an actual chess enthusiast makes this one feel authentic.
Finals Pursuit chronicles the 2025 NBA Playoffs round-by-round, with each card numbered to 2,025. The OKC Thunder’s championship run is documented here, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Finals MVP card, complete with the Larry O’Brien Trophy and the Bill Russell Finals MVP award, with the Game 7 final score against the Indiana Pacers printed at the bottom, is the chase card from this insert set.
Oasis (Hobby case hit) is a tropical-themed case hit with a dreamy beach aesthetic. The Luka Doncic Oasis in his Lakers uniform, smiling in front of palm trees and pastel skies, is one of the most visually distinct cards Topps has produced.
Joy (case hit) celebrates the human side of basketball. The Nikola Jokic Joy card, featuring the Joker and his Nuggets teammates in a tunnel moment before a game, captures genuine emotion rather than posed action.
Boom Shaka Laka (Retail case hit) leans hard into ’90s hip-hop and basketball culture with a music player-inspired design at the bottom. The Giannis Antetokounmpo card, styled like a song is playing at the 2:25 mark, is exactly the kind of creative swing that makes Hoops different from the competition.
Next Episode (Hobby-exclusive) is a retro television-themed rookie insert. Low-numbered parallels of prospects like Derik Queen in the Pixel Burst Red at 1/5 are serious short-print chases.
The Buzz (Retail-exclusive) features a honeycomb and bee-themed design. Kon Knueppel’s The Buzz numbered to 99 in the Light Burst Purple parallel is one of the more popular rookie inserts from early retail breaks.
Additional retail inserts include Hardwired and Jam-Packed, while Block by Block serves as a retail-only case hit alongside Boom Shaka Laka.
Autographs
The autograph checklist is deep and well-structured across both Hobby and Retail formats.
1989 Signatures is the crown jewel of the auto program. Drawing directly from the card design that launched the Hoops brand in 1989-90, this set features on-card autographs from veterans and rookies alike. LeBron James, Cooper Flagg, and Ace Bailey are among the confirmed subjects. The LeBron James 1989 Signatures, with its glitter Pixel Burst background and the Lakers nameplate across the bottom, is one of the most visually stunning basketball autos in years.
Rookie Signatures is the main rookie auto set. Cooper Flagg’s Rookie Signatures, styled like a scouting report with his team card photo, height, weight, age, and fingerprint area alongside his blue on-card signature, is the most important card in the product.
Hoops Signs (Hobby-exclusive) brings a neon arena marquee design to the auto chase. The Victor Wembanyama Hoops Signs numbered to 10 in Pixel Burst Black is a spectacular pull and one of the most distinct autograph designs Topps has produced.
Rookie Duals put two first-year players together on one autographed card. The Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel Rookie Dual numbered to just 01/10 is the chase card for anyone focused on the rookie auto side of this product.
Rookie Veteran Duals pair rookies with established stars. The Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle combination is the most significant from a Spurs perspective, connecting the 2024 and 2025 Rookies of the Year on one card.
Rookie Triples add a third signer into the mix for even rarer pulls.
Hyper Signatures (Retail-exclusive) delivers bold, grid-patterned autos to the retail format. Stephen Curry’s Hyper Signatures numbered to 1/5 in the red parallel and Victor Wembanyama’s 1/1 Hyper Signatures are among the rarest cards in the entire product.
