Gym Heroes was the first of two “Gym” sets that were released in 2000, shortly after the final base set, Team Rocket, was unveiled to the public.
This set was unique, as instead of featuring generic Pokémon, each card in the set represents a Pokémon owned by a specific Gym Leader from the original games and TV show. With this aspect, each of the set’s Pokémon has a more personal and character-linked feel.
While earlier sets featured wild or standard Pokémon, Gym Heroes focused on tying things directly to trainer-themed Pokémon, which helped build up the overarching universe between the TCG and other aspects of media.
Several of the most famous Pokémon got multiple variations based on various owners in this set, leading to unique cards with different attacks, HP and attributes.
The Pokémon TCG universe was shaken up by the newfound design and styles of the Gym Heroes set, with a lot of its cards taking major jumps up in value. Let’s take a look at three of the most valuable cards from Pokémon Gym Heroes!
#3: Gym Heroes 1st Edition Erika’s Dragonair #4 – $157.36
Erika’s Dragonair is one of the biggest fan-favorites out of the Gym Heroes set, and it’s also the third most valuable. This Holo card features Dragonair coiled up in front of a sparkling and mysterious background, which contributes to its mystical vibe.
One aspect that’s unique about this card is that Erika is a trainer who’s known for dealing with grass-type Pokémon, but she’s switching things up by working with Dragonair, a dragon-type. This may pique the interest of collectors, as it’s a unique concept and it highlights the creative nature of this Gym Heroes set.
Both the card’s standout artwork and rare trainer-Pokemon pairing help contribute to its high value. According to the Ludex app, one of these cards is worth an estimated $157.36.
#2: Gym Heroes 1st Edition Misty #18 – $182.26
This Misty card from Gym Heroes is one of the recognizable Trainer cards from the early Pokémon TCG era. In the middle of this card’s illustration, Misty is confidently standing in her battle-ready pose, ready for whatever comes her way.
Misty is an essential figure in the Pokémon universe, as she is one of the main characters of the Pokémon TV show. One of the biggest parts of this card that elevates its value, along with her being a fan-favorite character, is that this is the first-ever Misty Trainer card to come out.
If you’re looking to build up your collection with one of these cards, you can expect to pay an estimated $182.26 according to the Ludex app.

#1: Gym Heroes 1st Edition Sabrina’s Gengar #14 – $579.51
By far and away the most valuable card from this set is the Gym Heroes 1st Edition Sabrina’s Gengar card, which is No. 14 in the set. The holo artwork of the card features Gengar flashing a menacing look, with a vibrant outer-space-themed backdrop to cap it all off.
With Gengar being arguably the most popular ghost-type Pokémon, any vintage holo Gengar card is extremely high in demand, something that’s made clear by the price of this card in particular. Cards like this one have seen a continued uptick in value as of late, mainly due to Gengar’s impactful presence in recent years of Pokémon media.
Ending our list with a bang, this card is worth over three times more than the card that came before it. One of these Sabrina’s Gengar cards is worth a whopping $579.51 according to the estimates of the Ludex app.
The Pokémon Gym Heroes set certainly changed things in the TCG universe, and as you can see, a lot of its cards are hefty investments.
