Discovering what card collecting is all about, a rookie’s path to becoming a collector.

Sufficient to say I have gained preliminary knowledge on the subject of card trading, but before now my research has all been fact based and structured. It is presently time to venture into the unknown. I will scour through less proven material and attempt to figure out why the mind might enjoy collecting.

Fear not, I will return to the subject of physical card traits and what makes them valuable, but without further ado, let’s jump into the psyche of an avid trading card collector.

In order to become versed in the hobby of sports cards, I need to understand why someone would want to collect them. From an outsider’s perspective collecting seems to be overly time consuming and distressingly expensive. So what’s the draw? (Pun intended.)

The Dopamine Loop

When talking about something enjoyable one must talk about dopamine. For those who aren’t familiar, dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that acts as a messenger. It connects feelings of pleasure with behavior, motivating you to repeat these actions.

The excitement of opening your first card is a great example of something that would cause a dopamine release. In this case, obtaining one card = brain releases dopamine = the brain wants to repeat action, and so on the cycle goes until you find yourself with enough cards to be considered a collector.

The Zeigarnik Effect: Why Incomplete Sets Drive Us Crazy

An interesting mental compulsion called the Zeigarnik Effect also has a place in the psychology of collecting. This effect offers an explanation as to why our brains obsess over incomplete sets more than finished ones. The psychological tension of a missing card creates a “cognitive open loop,” driving collectors to constantly hunt for the final cards to conquer the lingering feeling of incompleteness.

The Thrill of the Hunt, Nostalgia, and Community

Outside of basic science there are other reasons people may find this hobby entertaining. The thrill of the hunt drives individuals to search for cards to add to their personal collection. Since I have learned some cards are very rare, this is a key aspect of the excitement. Pursuing these gems becomes a motivating challenge for the mentioned parties. The joy and satisfaction resulting from finding an elusive card must be euphoric.

In addition to pure pleasure I am sure some of the “older” folk in this area feel nostalgic when coming across a trading card. Those who started their hobby in childhood turn to collecting as an adult to keep that connection with their past alive. Collecting serves as a way to hold on to bits of the past. The physical item represents a memento of simpler times, childhood innocence, and fond memories.

Lastly, cards have the unique ability to bring people together. Trading, playing, and discussing cards can form a community surrounding shared interests. Collectors commonly attend events, join focus groups, and participate in activities where they can connect with others who share a similar passion. Card shows are a great example of people coming together to enjoy the social aspect of the hobby.

Although there are many possible reasons for an individual to find their way into the activity that is collecting cards, it really isn’t a perfect science. People enjoy all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. I guess I have to figure out if I am one of those who fall into this category by trying out collecting trading cards myself.

To end off here are some quotes from the hobbyists of Ludex on why they enjoy collecting cards:

“It is a way to represent who you believe in, whether it be teams or players.” One Ludex employee said. “Kind of a way for me to put my money where my mouth is, if I am investing in a player.”

“It’s something physical you can hold on to that represents the fandom that excites you in sports.” Another stated.

“It’s nostalgic, it’s fun, and it’s fulfilling.” A team member recited.

“Trading cards combine nostalgia and the joy of interacting with other collectors I’d otherwise never meet.” An employee said. “It gives me an opportunity to build a unique collection by buying, selling, or trading. It’s the perfect mix of nostalgia, interaction, passion for sports, and investment potential.”
